Come on over – I’m Teaching Photography

Let’s get started!

I’m Gary Culley and I’ve always enjoyed teaching photography.  Passion is the word to describe my feelings about this crazy thing. It’s exciting to see how technical advances have made picture-making available to more folks.  My alternative camera is on my phone. How about you?  So much has changed since film but so much was learned because of film. We learned alot. It was fun but we continue to learn all these new things.  Camera’s with no mirrors, we’ve had them all along.  We called them 4×5, 8×10, Holga and Polaroid.

Well, those analog days are gone and we’re all riding a fast train that finds an increase (monumental increase) in resolution and features every year or so.  In December 2008 the Nikon D3x came out and wow, it had a 24 megapixel sensor.  I recently checked and found that all the entry level Nikons had the same (24mp) resolution and of course, the D800 comes in with 36 megapixels.  That’s fast.  Well all the new technology is awesome and I have grown with it.

Don’t forget what Ansel said,

the print is the performance and the things before are the composers score.  So all the things leading up to the photo are only good if the finished photo is good.

Tell me and I forget, teach me and I remember, involve me and I learn.  Benjamin Franklin

Join up, sign up, check me out and get involved.  We’ll be talking about lessons for beginners with the camera fresh out of the box, intermediate methods with  lighting, and advanced with subjective techniques where you’ll be instructed about specifics but never told “this is the only way” because there lies the fun of photography.  Its all your choice and your art.
